81 Services for Sending Online Invoices

81 Services for Sending Online Invoices

As a small business owner, you need to get paid, and you need to get paid on time. But unless you’re an accountant or bookkeeper, you can benefit from spending less time managing the invoicing process and more time growing your business.

I was inspired by Emily’s recent post on deadbeat clients (and the excellent comments provided!), so I created a list of online invoicing services that make it easy to submit invoices. Being able to invoice online and, in some cases, receive payment online not only streamlines the billing process, but it can also help you get paid.

There are hundreds of online invoicing services that will help you send and track invoices; we compiled 81 to give you a start. Our list is split into two: ready-to-go online invoicing services (no installation required), and open source online invoicing software (for online invoicing that gives you 100% control over installation, access and data). We included a mix of free and paid, and a wide variety of features.

If you’re looking for a new online billing system for your business, you are likely to find one on this list that meets all of your needs.

Have you used any of these services? Do you know of one not listed? Please share your favorite service for sending online invoices in the comments!

  1. What a great list! Its good to see Curdbee on this list. I personally used it and it does what its supposed to do, has great features and only cost me $5 a month.

    • Alyssa Gregory

I’ve heard great things about Curdbee, Carlana. Glad to see you confirm that it’s a worthwhile service!

  2. Wow. This is certainly a comprehensive list Alyssa. Well done.

We just made the move to Quickbooks Online version and setup the recurring invoices to be emailed automatically each month. It’s certainly a time saver and, as of yet, haven’t really experienced many problems with it.

    Thanks for the insight.

    • Alyssa Gregory

Thanks, Thom. I actually use the regular version of QuickBooks myself, but if I ever decide to move to an all-online system, I think QuickBooks Online would be my choice, too!

  3. Make that 82 :)

Wave Accounting is FREE and does full double-entry accounting, including invoicing.

    • Thanks for the addition, Scott. Will check it out!

  4. I personally use Freshbooks and loving it! Its as if they created it with Virtual Assistants in mind. I highly recommend it for freelancers too. Will definitely checkout the rest of the list here. Thanks for always sharing the best tools Alyssa!

    • Thanks for the comment, Ella. (Freshbooks is the favorite of a handful of readers I have heard from!)

  5. Veronica Parkder

GREAT! Just what I was looking for! I am a (virtual) bookkeeper who supports many sole proprietors in their start-up stages; affordability is the key!

  6. Invoicebus is a product that me and my teammates have been handcrafting in the past few months with simplicity in mind. I believe should perfectly fit in the list.
Currently it’s in the final development stage and will arrive in the late autumn of 2011,
    or exactly on November 30.

Invoicebus doesn’t do much, but what it does is extremely well and focused. Has less features and preferences deliberately, relieving its customers from the heavy burden of choice. Actually that’s why we built it – to underdo its competition, to has less features than them, to be simple and smooth as 1,2,3.

P.S Thanks for sharing this great list of our competitors ;)

    • Thanks for sharing Invoicebus, Stefan. Looking forward to learning more when it launches!

  7. Sharone

I’ve been with Curdbee for nearly 2+ years now and they’ve been keeping me impressed ever since. I found them on Lifehacker if I remember correct and they kept improving the experience without making it complex and expensive.

  8. This is a great list Alyssa! I was familiar with many of the solutions listed, but I didn’t see my personal favorite Paymo.biz. Hopefully it will make the cut next time :)

  9. Great article Alyssa,

I did find this page when I was searching for “online invoicing”.

I’m one of the developers of http://www.startinvoicing.com/ and would like to introduce it here.

The whole reason why we developed Start Invoicing was that we couldn’t find anything what would offer and online invoicing and cash flow (not just reports) together.

Our main target is to keep it as simple as possible, however to offer everything necessary.

If you get a chance feel free to check it out. If you would like to review in-depth I could provide you with free Premium Account.

We love feedback including criticism ;)

    Thank you

    • Thanks for adding Start Invoicing, Peter. Will be on my list to check out!

  10. Anil Batra

There is another software – a new one called Jusbill (www.jusbill.com). It takes just about 30 seconds to get started!! and the ease of billing/ inuitiveness :) is something i have not really been able to see anywhere else…definite recommendation!

  11. You should try –
    http://www.fetchflow.com

This is the easy way to issue an invoice for free!!!!
    Highly recommend!!!

  12. Chase is offering a new service called Zip. It seems pretty powerful but is a bit difficult to use. They have offered a basic version for free if your business has their Ink credit card. I can also vouch for postalmethods. They are awesome! We use postalmethods all the time and it really saves time.

  13. CFox

I would like to recommend CaseFox Web-based Time and Billing Software for time tracking and billing needs. CaseFox offers role based multi-user interface. No time restricted basic plan is free. Paid plans start at $10/month – no per user additional charges.

  14. Hi Alyssa,
This is a great compilation. We always preferred PayPal for payments and used our own internal self-built solutions for invoicing. I did not know that even PayPal offers invoicing solution but you mentioned that in your article. So I am going to check out this feature and see how it can help me and my clients.

Thanks for pointing it out. Appreciate it.

  15. What a list :O ! Good work, keep it up!

Right now Im using the Bilomat Online Invoicing Tool. Its a good choice for every freelancer of small company as the processing of the invoices and quotes is easy and fast. In the same time the price is low, so I really recomend it for every one with no fiscal skills ;).

    Cheers,
    Archie

  16. Thanks for the list.
I would recommend Accountlab plus. Its php based online and it’s open source and free. Bit fiddly getting recurring invoices working via cron jobs but I got there in the end. siwapp would be great if it had a payment gateway.
    Cheers
    Keith Miller

  17. If anybody is interested this is our invoicing program “Busy Bee Invoicing” you can find it here: http://bee-software.net/invoice-software/
No monthly fees, receive all future software updates free. Runs on, Mac, P.C. & Linux. We are updating the software all the time.

  18. Nice list, thanks Alyssa!
Please check out http://www.1clickbusiness.com. It manages invoicing/proposals and it has great dashboard module.

  19. Wow, this is a huge list of online invoicing sources. Actually I had never come across such a big list of invoicing tools ever. Nice post. Thanks.

  20. Dan

    Excellent work. Thanks Alyssa!
Please check out http://www.datamoto.com. It provides a complete online solution for quote and invoice. It is very easy to use and integrated with inventory. It also has sales order and purchase order management modules which comes handy for future expansion for small business.

  21. It is great to have a comprehensive list but I am overwhelmed by the idea of exploring this number of choices. As a sole practitioner, freelancer, who needs a minimalist system, is there a simplest, easiest system you would recommend?
And while I am at it, is there a payment system you would recommend? As I am using it, PayPal charges a 15% fee which is too high; Chase Quick Pay seems to be a better option I am using with one client; it needs to be electronic rather an in person payment like Square.
Thank you for your work and your time in answering this.
    Jenifer

  22. Ferenc Nagy

Hi All, This is great collection. Please check out our solution: http://main-books.com

  23. Why would you pay for an online solution when you can manage invoices, estimates, expenses, timesheets, projects and employees for FREE.
simply register for nutcache at http://www.nutcache.com.
    It’s easy, simple and free.
No time trial, no limitations, no pro version, no credit card.

  24. you can check out http://www.intilivoice.com and thy are only $1.00 & 2.9% to use per paid invoice.

  25. Emily

ADP Payments has a monthly cost but their interest rates are very low and the system is easy and integrated with the rest of their small business tools for payroll, cash flow, and compliance. I would definetely recomend for anyone to try it…. and I know I can trust using them!

  26. Adrian

Hi there – many thanks for the FreeAgent shout out here!

We’ve actually just launched something new that could be of interest to include on this list. It’s a free online invoicing tool called Invoice-o-matic (http://invoiceomatic.io/) that’s specifically designed for small businesses and freelancers.
It’s 100% free with no hidden costs or limits – you just use it to create & send invoices easily and painlessly online. It even sends you reminder emails when your payment deadlines have passed, so you remember to chase up any unpaid/outstanding invoices.

    See it action here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFrqM803EIQ

  30. Nice work. Thanks Alyssa!
KEEPEK is a web app that our team have been working on for the past few months. It is a solution for online invoicing and travel expense management as well. We think it is perfect for small business owners.

  32. Kaleem

Invoice system should be simple and very less time consumable. For this reason I use http://agorathemart.in which is very simple and has many powerful tools like CRM, Ad Promotion, and one great tool is SMS Invoice! I love this app. If anybody interested in SMS Invoices just login and go through the demo first…

  33. Joshua

  39. Stephie Daniel

This is a wonderful list of resources that is meant for the online invoicing but I missed the one that is being used by me, the cloud based expense reporting software from Replicon ( http://www.replicon.com/olp/expense-reports.aspx ) which is featured with user friendly and calender based interface.

  40. Alan Oak

This is the most comprehensive list I’ve seen. Congratulations! Here’s another one to add: Fetchflow: http://www.fetchflow.com/blog/authorize-net-invoicing. Starts at FREE, $3 a month for pro, and it integrates with authorize.net and other payment gateways for ecommerce.

  41. Riccardo
