How Goal Setting Usually Starts Off
Let me know if this sounds familiar to you. You have an awesome idea of something you want to accomplish in your business. It’s something you’ve wanted to do for a long time, and it makes the perfect goal for the New Year.
So, you hit up Google and find pages and pages of articles about what you should and shouldn’t do to set and achieve your goals. You click on a few of the articles, and start taking notes. Some of the recurring tips include: writing your goals down on paper, spending a lot of time on your goal every single day, tracking your progress, etc.
You feel prepared to dive in. This is the year it finally all comes together. So you add your goal to your to-do list, download a goal-setting app, and feel completely confident that you will achieve your goal. You’re psyched to get started.
But then this happens. You fall back into your day-to-day routine, focusing on your most time-sensitive priorities and handling all of the new ones that pop up unexpectedly. It becomes clear that you just never seem to have the time. You keep moving your goal down on your to-do list. First, it moves to tomorrow, then next week, then next month. You just need more time!
One day, about three months after you started planning for this goal, you ask yourself a few questions. Where should I start? How do I do this? Is it really worth it?
You decide you will figure all of that out next week, then next month, then…
The goal just falls off your list entirely.
Why This Happens
If this sounds familiar to you, don’t feel bad. This has happened to most of us at one point or another when we attempt to set goals. But when we take a closer look to figure out what went wrong, there are a few things that stick out.
First, did you make sure this goal was realistic for where you are right now in terms of money, motivation, and time you have available? Are you clear on why you even want to do this? How about setting a timeline for your goal with an end date? Or, did you create an action plan that you can actually execute?
No? It sounds like you didn’t set yourself up for success from the beginning. You probably already know how to set goals — it’s pretty basic, but you won’t succeed unless you do a few critical things. These critical goal setting actions are not hard, but they often make the difference between success and failure when it comes to setting and achieving goals.
